Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What is TMS? Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, effective, and non-drug treatment for depression that uses focused magnetic pulses - similar in strength to an MRI - to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. By reactivating these neural connections, many individuals experience significant relief from depressive symptoms.
2. Does it work? Yes. In a study of real-world outcomes, 83% of individuals who completed the full treatment course reported a measurable reduction in the severity of their depression. Notably, 62% achieved full remission, meaning their symptoms no longer met the criteria for depression.
3. Does it hurt? Most patients tolerate the treatment well. Some may experience mild discomfort at the treatment site during the first few sessions, but this typically subsides within the first week. There is no sedation involved, and treatment does not affect alertness - you can read, watch TV, or converse with your TMS treater during the session. Patients are able to drive themselves home immediately afterward.
4. Is it covered by insurance? Yes, TMS is covered by most major insurance providers - including Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare, as well as many commercial plans in New Mexico. Coverage varies by provider, and our TMS team will assist you in verifying your benefits and eligibility. For those without insurance coverage, we offer flexible cash-pay and in-office financing options.
5. Who is TMS for? TMS is FDA-cleared for adults who have not experienced relief from antidepressant medication with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Depression with Anxiety, and/or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). During your initial consultation, our TMS coordinator will review your medical history and determine whether you meet the criteria for treatment.
